Precision agriculture applied in avocado crops located in The Caral EstateThe use of sensors connected wirelessly to the cloud allows cost savings in avocado plantations located in Supe, Barranca (Peru). An Internet of Things (IoT)-based solution was deployed in avocado fields to develop precision agriculture. This system allows agricultural producers to obtain data to better control crop growth, prevent losses caused by adverse weather conditions or infectious pests, and thus facilitate the return on investment. The Avocado plantations are in the initial growth phase and will take 3 years to fully cultivate. During this time, Fundo Caral aims to remotely monitor the humidity, temperature, conductivity, and soil pH every 20 minutes.Obtaining this data will provide crucial information for decision-making in water resource management (water consumption) and fertilizer usage. This data is stored on a cloud platform and plays a pivotal role in ensuring efficient resource management.Technological solutionThe communications protocol used is called LoRaWAN, and allows the installed sensors to consume little energy, with a battery life of 5 to 10 years (depending on the interval of sending readings).Convergia’s solution also increased communication coverage in the open field, with 10 km between the devices and gateway. The gateway requires a backhaul communication to the internet via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or in this case, by a mobile network (2G/3G/4G). For this project, Convergia’s CxC SIM was used as a mobile network, which provides data packages designed for IoT applications. The sensors were installed at different depths (20, 40 and 60 cm) to measure humidity, starting from a point close to the surface to below the root of the crops.Market PartnerThis project was carried out by our Market Partner, Zeit, a software development company with more than 7 years of experience in the market.About Zeit:Since 2015, ZEIT PERU has been committed to efficiently offering consulting services in Information Technology (Cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Robotic Process Automation, IT Infrastructure), software development, marketing of Microsoft licenses and Outsourcing IT personnel.Zeit Peru continues this through innovative technology and qualified personnel with extensive experience in delivering services and solutions to clients from different industries. Cybersecurity: Companies are the Main Victims of Cyber-Attacks December 16, 2020 The pandemic has not only represented a challenge in health and economic terms but has also increased the number of cyber threats directed at companies, making the role of cybersecurity more relevant than ever. Cyber-crooks are taking advantage of these uncertain times to launch digital attacks on companies of all sectors and sizes. These attacks can represent a serious blow to any business, especially in economic and credibility terms, as a data leak can cause a company to lose the trust of its customers. You may also like: Cybersecurity in times of crisis 1. Cybersecurity on the rise As we have already mentioned, the pandemic – coupled with the spread of teleworking – is significantly increasing cybersecurity gaps in companies. This is mentioned in the Digital Trust Survey 2021 report, prepared by PwC based on the opinions of 3,249 managers and technology managers in companies around the world. The report also reveals that, in this context, and despite the difficult situation from a business point of view, companies are betting on increasing their investments in cybersecurity and increasing their teams. According to the study, 55% of those that were interviewed plan to increase their cybersecurity budgets in 2021, thus making a leap in the use of digital technologies. 2. What are the most common cyber-attacks? The report also explains the most common cyber-attacks that companies can suffer, take note! – Attacks targeting cloud services – The “ransomware”(encryption of company data) – Disruptive attacks on critical business areas In terms of impact, respondents estimate that attacks targeting their cloud services along with ransomware are the ones that can potentially have the most negative effect on businesses. 3. Today, thanks to business and home routers, we can schedule video conferences, attend online seminars, buy items in virtual markets, play online games, etc. This device is usually working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and with a generally considerable workload. Thus, when there is a bad connection, the company usually attributes the problem to the provider of the service. However, sometimes the quality of the router is overlooked. It is very important to know the main characteristics that a good business router must have in order to provide an optimal service to your company. In the following article we want to share with you the most important things to consider: 1. Business Router vs. Home Router Generally, small businesses use home routers that provide internet to all their computers within a small office space. However, we must bear in mind that these routers only offer basic functionalities and little protection against cyber attacks, so they are not recommended for business use. An enterprise router, on the other hand, allows you to provide internet to more than a dozen computers and other devices. In addition, it provides greater security and speed for your work and daily activities. 2. VPN and Firewall servers for Secure and Remote Connectivity Another important feature to consider is VPN servers. But what are VPN servers? This is a network technology used to connect one or more computers to a private network in a reliable way, via the Internet. In this way, a router with a VPN server supports remote connections so that users working from home can securely access the business network. Likewise, to improve the security and protection of your company, the router must have an enterprise-grade firewall, since it establishes effective measures for blocking information. This computer device also prevents virus infections or external attacks from computers to hack into a network and steal all your information. 3. Routers with SIM slots; an important point! Sometimes, your connection may fail for several hours, resulting in “dead hours” with little to no productivity. Hence, it is essential to have a backup network (SIM CARD), which solves these problems, providing you with high speed and very secure internet instantly. These are some of the features that a good business router should have. Did you know that Convergia’s CxC Router has all of these features and many more? WRITE TO US for more information.

Almost all aspects of what we used to call normal, including how we conduct business or live our personal lives, are consistently and swiftly changing because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst of the ever-changing situation, and as we focus on critical issues like public health, the world’s economy, and business continuity, it is only natural that we lose focus on other areas that quite important, namely cybersecurity Probably you heard terms like “Zoombombing”, which is the name given to security breaches that lead to disruptive intrusions on the now-famous Zoom™ videoconferencing platform. But, that is just one token of a much larger issue that is growing exponentially since the pandemic. You may also like: Reducing Telecom costs while increasing productivity In cybersecurity jargon, the situation can be described as “a significant increase of cyberattacks due to the expansion of the attack surface and the acceleration of new vectors of attack”; allow me to translate. If we forgo the fancy jargon, we are saying that now we have to protect more points of potential access (attack surface) from an increasing number of types of attack (attack vectors). I will get back to this assertion. So, the question remains, why the sudden increase. At first glance, it could seem counterintuitive; let’s elaborate a bit. The pandemic caused (and in many cases keeps doing it) major lockdowns, business disruptions, temporary and permanent closures, etc. So, it will seem to stand to reason that with fewer businesses operating at standard capacity, the number of cyberattacks should be proportionally reduced, except that we know for a fact that the reality shows quite the opposite. To understand this phenomenon, we need to analyze what happened and what was the reaction of most companies in the face of the crisis. Overnight, most countries were facing a mandatory, or at least a strong recommendation to stay at home, which in turn forced companies to devise ways to all the sudden accommodate an unprecedented, even unthinkable, number of employees that needed to work from home. We all should agree that nobody in IT or Telecom could have predicted or planned to have 80% or more of the workforce working remotely. The systems, including available bandwidth, security appliances, etc. were not designed to sustain that level of workload. In a pre-crisis scenario, most companies had some degree of remote working, usually the “road warriors,” but that amounted only to a fraction of the total workforce. Furthermore, the persons authorized to work remotely were either equipped with company-issued controlled devices (e.g., smartphone, mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, laptop, hardware token generators, etc.), or if the company allowed to do BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), those devices were subject to strictly enforced security policies. In jargon terms, the attack surface was well-known, limited, and controlled. When the crisis stroke companies were forced to improvise and, reluctantly but certainly, relax their “security posture” (jargon for the overall readiness to withstand or mitigate attacks). Devices that were not prepared to be operating outside a controlled environment (i.e., the corporate LAN) were allowed to be used in unknown environments; many workers were permitted to BYOD but without enforcing security policies. Unless you are into cybersecurity, the chances are that security at home is just a password for the Wi-Fi (and if you have kids, it’s probably something quite easy to remember) and the default configuration that your ISP put into the modem/router that connects you to the Internet. More to the point, of all the devices connected to your Wi-Fi (the ones you know and the ones you do not), many of them could be highly vulnerable and be used to attack and gain unauthorized access to your home network. Exploits (more jargon; an exploit is a type of attack that has a successful implementation; in other words, it works in a real-life scenario, not just in theory) like “krack” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRACK) and more recently “kr00k”, both used bugs on the implementation of the WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access version 2) protocol that encrypts the Wi-Fi traffic. With kr00k alone, the estimation of affected devices was in the billions. The good news is that a fix for most devices exists, and many vendors already applied it. Now, if you think that nobody will mess up with your Wi-Fi because even within your house, you can barely get a decent signal, so the attacker will have to be sitting in your living room to do any harm, think again. Probably you never heard about “War Driving” or “War Walking.” Simply put, take a hacker, add a serving of hardware, a pinch of software, and a car just for good measure, and you have a mobile Wi-Fi password cracker that roams the city cracking and storing Wi-Fi passwords; replace the car with a backpack and voila, the same effect. And if you think that this is troublesome, now add a cheap readily available drone to the recipe, and you have a remotely controlled device suitable for wide-area surveillance and hacking that is quite hard to detect. I will leave it up to you to research about WASP (Wi-Fi Aerial Surveillance Platform) and Project Cuckoo. Therefore, we can conclude that most homes do not qualify as a secure environment. It is worth noting that even if you have a strong VPN (Virtual Private Network) running on the company’s laptop (to secure your connection to the company systems), and even if you are using hardware generated tokens, that alone does not guarantee that other compromised devices within the same network (your home Wi-Fi) can be used by “cyber actors” (jargon for hackers) to remotely take control of your laptop and piggyback your secure connection to the company. Back to the original assertion; now we can appreciate why and how the attack surface has grown several times fold; no longer do companies have to worry only about the security of their main offices, branches, and road warriors; but rather, they also have to rethink their whole security posture to include the homes of the personnel working remotely. The combination of o broader surface attack, with the increased use of unsecured devices and networks, was like a Christmas present for most hackers. Hence the increased number of attacks. If you do not think this is serious enough, maybe the official FBI warning will change your mind. “The FBI advises you to carefully consider the applications you or your organization uses for telework applications, including video conferencing software and voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) conference call systems. Telework software comprises a variety of tools that enable users to remotely access organizational applications, resources, and shared files. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a spike in businesses teleworking to communicate and share information over the internet. With this knowledge, malicious cyber actors are looking for ways to exploit telework software vulnerabilities in order to obtain sensitive information, eavesdrop on conference calls or virtual meetings, or conduct other malicious activities [emphasis added].” – Alert I-040120-PSA FBI (IC3) (30-Mar-2020) Securing the “Work From Home” is quite a challenge, but it is not impossible. A combination of antivirus, antimalware, firewalls, VPNs, and more recently, SD-WAN does help. In fact, SD-WAN can play a significant role. Most tend to think of SD-WAN in terms of a complicated and expensive platform that can connect main offices, branches, etc. However, SD-WAN can be as simple as small, inexpensive devices that can be shipped to the homes we need to protect and then configured and managed remotely. As an additional benefit, SD-WAN at home can transparently aggregate a second broadband Internet service or a Wireless 4G/LTE connection, effectively increasing the bandwidth available for demanding applications like video conferencing, screen sharing, etc. Now your kids can keep squeezing every megabit out of your home Internet connection streaming to their heart’s content, and you will still be able to hold that important video conference in a more secure way and without freezing up. For more about the benefits of SD-WAN, you can check the recorded version of my Webinar, “Reducing your Telecom Cost while Increasing productivity,” here:  Dante Passalacqua VP of Technology at Convergia Inc

The Internet of Things (IoT) is undoubtedly one of the great technological innovations within the 4th industrial revolution. This revolution brings to us a connected world, where data management, artificial intelligence, and automation become critical for our business and way of life. You make also like:Convergia signs on as Libelium’s Pan-American Value Added Distributor of Advanced IoT Solutions Among the many opportunities offered by IoT, “Fleet Management” plays a very important role in the way this industry can be revolutionized. There are two main components that make the Internet of Things possible: connected devices (eg sensors, terminals) ,and the data generated. When applied to vehicle fleets, route and vehicle management efficiency, as well as instant reaction time in the event of an accident can be revolutionized and improved. Through real-time data management and vehicle information analysis, companies can optimize their established routes, since the IoT anticipates traffic variables, thereby improving travel time and providing alternatives. Therefore, an optimized route increases safety and reduces costs, thus generating operational efficiency. The implementation of IoT in fleet management can provide a lot of benefits for all companies in the sector. The following are some important implementations of Fleet Management: GPS trackingDriving speed measurementAutomatic engine shutdownTravel historyDetailed reports of the operationCustomization of geographical locations (perimeter)Real-time monitoringLive communicationPreventive Maintenance With the benefits that fleet management provides, access to a level of knowledge that was previously almost impossible is now attainable. Also, all this information can be available at all times since it can be hosted in the cloud. A fleet of connected vehicles not only collects information but also collects a multitude of data from abroad. Therefore, companies do not have to rely on external services that provide information on the state of traffic or road works. Personal vehicles report the variables in real-time, allowing for immediate recalculation of the routes. Having a vehicle equipped with connected sensors also improves the safety of the employee and the vehicle in the event of an accident and minimizes its impact on the company. The Internet of Things helps to act quickly in case of an accident and accesses a large amount of data to define damages and responsibilities. In addition, with all vehicles connected, companies can now optimize the operational cost of fleets. Thus, the large volume of data generated by a connected fleet is important for making decisions for the business. It should be noted that with IoT Fleet Management, analysis of data increases efficiency and optimizes resources, as well as improves cybersecurity levels to protect companies and their customers.

Unless we are disconnected from the world of telecommunications in the last two years, we have most likely heard the mention of the term SD-WAN more and more frequently. The truth is that SD-WAN has become the new center of attention for all actors in the world of telecommunications, in a very similar way to what happened a few years ago with cloud services. In that case, it should not surprise us, when the most important analysts in the market, such as Gartner, IDC, and many others, predicted that by 2020, companies will spend more than USD 6,000 million on SD-WAN technology worldwide The best of all is that you are here to stay for a long time, it is just beginning. For this reason, today we call it “New Kid On The Block (NKOTB)”. Let’s start by asking ourselves the following question: What is SD-WAN? Do not be surprised if the answers vary significantly from one to another, and we may receive a different response for each source we consult (this is the technology, changing, so nobody has the last word). For us, in Convergia, this same question was the beginning of a long, but very satisfying journey that has been going on for more than two years, during which we have had the opportunity to extensively investigate the technology, the different concepts, suppliers, and even the very different forecasts about the SD-WAN solution. Convergia, as a service provider (ISP), has found that it is easier to start by defining that it is not the SD-WAN solution to handle a clearer concept. Which are: It is not a means of transmitting informationIt is not a new communications protocolIt has been misnamed by some providers as the “MPLS Killer” SD-WAN is the response to the new demands of organizations towards their communications networks. We can also say that it is the convergence of at least a dozen different technologies, many of which have been present in the telecommunications industry for several decades now. The crucial difference is that now all these technologies applied together represent a substantial advance in terms of reliability, information security, flexibility, agility, speed of implementation and most importantly a cost reduction of up to 90% versus traditional solutions such as MPLS But what technologies are we talking about? For technologies such as data compression, strong encryption, protocol acceleration, temporary storage (“caching”), load balancing, redirection in case of failure, VPN and link aggregation (“link aggregation” or also known as “bonding” ); all of them available for many years ago. That is why when we manage to integrate all of them into a single coherent solution, easy to implement and administer, we incorporate the selected dynamic routing capability, always the best possible route between two points in the network (think a second in WAZE), self-configuration ( which reduces human intervention), and most importantly, we add a central intelligence (which in SD-WAN language we will call “Orchestrator”), thus achieving a new way to connect geographically dispersed locations in a safe, fast, flexible, efficient and at a much lower cost than expected, all this is defined in a single SD-WAN word. SD-WAN networks offer us a new approach to connectivity, reducing operational costs and improving the use of communication resources between our headquarters in an intelligent, effective, simple and safe way. The SD-WAN solution was born due to the need of companies to extend the coverage of their services in different locations and locations; and, to achieve it efficiently, they need an agile network with the capacity to support a greater number of connected people. Now, in terms of cost reduction, this will mean that adopting SD-WAN could be reason enough to explain the explosive growth of this technology. However, if we analyze in greater depth, we will find that SD-WAN could not have arrived at a better time and that it is being very useful for the companies that are applying it due to the various benefits that it provides us. But, do you know what additional benefits apart from reducing operational costs, provides SD-WAN to companies? Here we will mention some of these: Facilitates processes: with SD-WAN it is easier to reach different devices, whether they are close in person or connected from the cloud. The IT team may be solely responsible for automating and globally implementing the network to more efficiently manage its administration.Improves the user experience: this solution can provide considerable bandwidth simply and economically, with better optimal and safe performance. This also makes it easier for users to use cloud applications.Easy installation in offices or offices: the installation of office equipment in SD-WAN networks can be performed automatically or through pre-configured devices that do not require the services of field engineers. Therefore, this system eliminates the traditional installation mechanism through a command line.Protects important data: no matter how much you have a Business Continuity or Disaster Recovery plan, having the SD-WAN solution will lead to the ability to safely and advanced preserve the important data your company has. With the explosion of cloud services, IoT, and even the beginning of the integration between OT (Operations Technology) and IT, the need to have constant, uninterrupted, secure, high capacity, reliable communication that can no longer connect hundreds, if not tens of thousands of devices, have made the SD-WAN solution the default option of any modern telecommunications design. Therefore, if we add to this the ability to deploy complex solutions worldwide in weeks instead of months, and the ability to install, configure and manage the entire solution with very little human intervention, then it becomes clear why the solution SD-WAN is now the new heart of telecommunications.

What is Microsoft Azure? Azure it’s an collection of services in the cloud, that appears as a response to the business systems in the private clouds, allowing to create, develop, implement and manage applications through a data centers global network. Being a public cloud with data centers around the world, anyone with an Internet connection can use it. But only those with the necessary credentials will be able to access to the Azure portal, where a series of services are generated, developed and used. How does it work? Azure uses ‘virtualization’ when creating a virtual computing environment that typically hosts operating systems, hardware versions and different devices. Thus, organizations can have multiple virtual machines and services that interact independently while sharing resources. Virtualization is divided into four main categories: Desktop virtualizationNetSoftwareStorage This technology expands on a large scale in Microsoft data centers around the world, improving scalability and workloads. At the same time, it greatly facilitates the implementation of services, by simply selecting the region of the datacenters and choosing the type of service and its characteristics. Which are the benefits of Azure? Numerous infrastructures and platforms available: Azure offers a wide variety of Infrastructures as a Service (IaaS), such as storage, networks, virtual machines, among others. Also, various Platforms as a Service (PaaS), such as CMS, ERPs, SQL, backend for mobile applications, among others. In addition, they are compatible with all types of technologies: iOS, Android, Linux, Oracle, and many more.Cost reduction: Azure adapts to the needs of your company, charging only the products you are using. In this way, it reduces the need to pay for inefficient resources, guaranteeing significant savings in consumption and maintenance of the service.Security: The data centers used by Azure apply the highest security standards today, ensuring their users full protection of their data, applications and infrastructure against possible threats.Reliability: The backups made by Azure ensure that your information is highly protected, preventing the loss of valuable information and facilitating disaster recovery with your backup or disaster recovery solution.Speed: With Azure, huge amounts of computing resources can be stored in minutes, allowing environments to be configured and codes published quickly. What is MPLS? The Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a mechanism that is responsable for routing the circulation within a telecommunications network. This is the reason why the nodes move from one network node to another, providing applications that include virtual private networks, quality service and traffic engineering. During this process, packetss move through the network thanks to the function of an assigned label. This same label is associated to the default route that exists on the network, allowing a better level of observation withing the networks of packets conmutation. What are the benefits of MPLS? It improves network performance and management to accomodate new applications.MPLS providers have the capacity to assign greater importance to certain network traffic, making it efficient because they improve performance and bandwidth utilization. It allows shared network resources and, for clients, private networks. What is SD-WAN? SD-WAN is a connectivity model defined by a software that aims to manage the WAN or wide area network. This way, traffic monitoring and management changes from physical devices to the application itselft. Because inteligence is attracted to a virtual overlay, secure grouping of public and private connections is allowed. Thanks to this, automation and network control can occur quickly through different links, in real time. What are the benefits of SD-WAN? It has the easiness to eliminate geographic boundaries, with improvements in terms of visibility, scalability, performance and network control. It has a bandwidth with no penalties, which means that clients can easily update by adding more links to their network, without having to make changes to its infraestrucutre or the network itself.Security and internet’s bandwidth, such as 4G LTE, are more efficient and less expensive, respectively, than the ones of MPLS.The network is pretty affordable, especially if we compare it to private ones like MPLS.Installation in networks and offices is extremely easy, and can be done automatically or through preconfigured devices.Applications can be managed directly, thus optimizing their performance. Differences between MPLS and SD-WAN The bandwidth cost of MPLS is usually expensive because it consists in aquiring a service throught an operator, while networks such as SD-WAN are more affordable because they can send traffic through public Internet.Although the MPLS network is usually safe, it doesn’t provide encryption, which is why is more exposed to vulnerabilities. On the other hand, SD-WAN technology is hosted on the Internet, so it increases its security by a lot.The MPLS bandwidth capacity is often congested as today’s consumers are interested in multimedia content. This doesn’t happen with SD-WAN since it has a considerable and optimal bandwidth capacity. Which technology should you use? Undoubtedly, the SD-WAN network offers much more advantages than the MPLS. Companies are constantly searching for better alternatives than the MPLS, so the SD-WAN network is usually recommended due to its low cost, unlimited bandwidth, extended waiting time and lengthy contract terms, compared to the MPLS. Convergia, the Pan American Distributor of Value Added for Connectivity Solutions, which offers a high-speed bespoke backbone network across Canada, the United States, Mexico, Peru and LATAM, presented its SD-WAN solution that will help companies maximize and increase network flexibility with great bandwidth efficiency. SD-WAN has become the new focus for all players in the world of telecommunications, as happened five years ago with Cloud Solution. SD-WAN networks offer a new intelligent, simple and secure connectivity approach by reducing operational costs, and improving the use of communication resources between headquarters. This model arose as a result of companies’ need to extend the coverage of their services in different areas. To effectively achieve this, they will need an agile network with the ability to support more people connected. You may also be interested in:What is SD-WAN and how it can benefit your Company? Benefits of SD-WAN to your company There are numerous benefits that companies can enjoy with SD-WAN solutions: Facilitates Processes: With SD-WAN, it is easier to reach different devices, whether they are close, in person, or connected to the cloud. The IT team can be solely responsible for automating and deploying the network globally, which will greatly increase management efficiency.Improves User Experience: This solution can provide better bandwidth performance in a simple way. This improves the performance of cloud applications and makes it easier for operators to use.Easy Office Installation: Installation of office equipment on SD-WAN networks can be done automatically or through preconfigured devices that do not require the services of field engineers. This system removes the traditional installation mechanism.Protects Important Data: Having a Disaster Recovery plan as part of Convergia’s SD-WAN solution will ensure security in the preservation of your company’s data. A few years ago, a vibrant new era of technology was ushered in. This new era brought to us data compression, strong encryption, protocol acceleration, caching, load balancing, automatic switching of traffic from one failed link to another (failover), and virtual private networks (VPN), to name just a few. However, all this technology can be integrated into a single solution that is easily deployable and manageable. This, therefore, provides us with the ability to add dynamic routing that always selects the best possible route between two points on a network, automatic configuration that reduces human intervention, and, most importantly, central intelligence, otherwise called ‘The Orchestrator’ in SD-WAN jargon. With this, we have a new way to connect geographically dispersed locations safely, quickly, flexibly and efficiently, at a fraction of the cost. That’s what SD-WAN is all about, says Dante Passalacqua, Chief Technology Officer of Convergia USA. As an additional point, we should consider comments from the most critical analysts in the market, such as Gartner, IDC and many others, who predict that by 2020, companies will spend more than $6 billion on SD-WAN technology worldwide. Furthermore, Carlos Mendoza, CEO of Convergia Peru, mentions: “having an SD-WAN solution in place allows you to optimize your connectivity costs up to 70%”. If your organization needs to start optimizing its bandwidth and be more resource-efficient, connect with Convergia today at www.convergia.io. It has been a few weeks since Convergia was at InnovaTech LATAM as an official sponsor in Santiago, Chile, presenting demos of IoT solutions with technology partners. We demonstrated that in the innovation ecosystem of the Internet of Things, connectivity is the gateway. Although this solution represents only 6% of the total market turnover in Latin America (*) versus 16 % globally (**), opening the way for the development of solutions based on customer demands, and bringing awareness to the operational efficiencies that IoT generates, produces new lines of business and improves customer experience. However, these statistics vary as time moves forward. The millions of connected devices or billing in exponential growth are indicators confirming that the opportunity within the market is great. In the local market for 2018, it is mentioned that there is a turnover of 168M USD, which will grow to 523M USD by 2022 (***). From our experience touring the market, we can affirm that we are in a stage of education rather than adoption, where industries such as mining, followed by fisheries and agronomists, are already progressing. For this, the different connectivity options offered such as GSM 3G / 4G, Sigfox, LoRA Wan (Low Power Wide Area Network Network), ZigBee (Low Power Digital Radio Signals for Personal Area Network) and satellite (a cheaper one than the other) points to different market segments depending on the volume of data required to transmit: GSM 3G & 4G: when the data ratio is very large (e.g.: CCTV, geolocation).LTE-M: when the ratio is less than 5Mbps (e.g.: traffic lights, logistics, payment methods).NB-IoT: when the ratio is less than 250Kbps (e.g.: vending machines, energy management in smart homes, parking lots, transport fleet management).LoRA WAN (LPWAN I): when the ratio is less than 10Kbps (e.g.: equipment monitoring, valves).UNB (LPWAN II): when the ratio is less than 600bps (e.g.: garbage dumps, doors, gas and water meters), the best example being SIGFOX network. It is said that with the arrival of 5G, the IoT will consolidate due to the high connectivity speeds that 5G will offer. As previously explained, most IoT solutions transport low data volume over extended periods. In this context, we believe that users can benefit from the increased availability of bandwidth in 3G / 4G networks, released by the adoption of 5G by the mass consumer market. However, the 5G network is going to make a difference for smart city as well as logistics and distribution solutions. This is because the volume of data generated is high, and the availability for decision-making occurs in less time, even more so with the use of Artificial Intelligence for analysis and immediate action… Connectivity provides the means through which the information collected by different types of sensors or digital reading devices travels. This information is sent to repositories, which can be on physical servers or in the cloud, the latter being the most used for several reasons: Convenience through accessVariation of developments hosted for analysis,Flexibility to increase storage in real-timeIt’s offered under a service model that allows cost efficiency versus the purchase of on-premise (physical) storage. At this point, we enter a very wide market of solutions that involve licensed software developments, sensors, communication gateways and management platforms. We can summarize that the IoT provides the ability to reduce the access times to the information generated by the connection of two or more devices, for decision making in real-time, generating benefits to the business and positively revolutionizing the customer experience. An example of the solution that each of the components of the IoT comprises is ‘Managed Wi-Fi (As A Service) with Analytics’. This solution is in high demand by shopping centers and retailers globally. But what exactly is this solution about? When the Public Wi-Fi infrastructure is mounted in an open or closed space, customers make use of it due to the need for connectivity (not all mobile operators in other geographies provide unlimited data plans, which is why Wi-Fi spaces in public are very important). We connect to Wi-Fi via a captive portal (where they ask us to register with one of our social media accounts, LinkedIn or through personal email) or via an application on Android or IOS (where we are asked to deliver information on our personal email and/or mobile number). In all these cases, the provider requests the user to read and accept the Terms and Conditions, where the scope of the use of the generated information is explained, and the personal information of the user is protected (according to the laws of the country). When the user registers and uses Wi-Fi, the provider can generate heat maps (also known as coverage maps) that represents the strength of the wireless signal in the different areas of the premises (For example; shopping centers, educational institutions, hospitals, retail stores, etc.). These maps allow the analysis of retail variables such as the number of people per zones in a given time (rush hour or opening hours of the premises), new visitors versus regular visitors, traffic patterns between zones as well as where visitors spend time between others. This improves customer experience because, with this information, the provider can optimize the areas of the premises, send offers and promotions in real-time from the different tenants to the clients, send important information to the clients, and even send internal security notifications. Therefore, here is where the biggest challenge for the provider lies; Generation of greater adoption to Public Wi-Fi while competing with unlimited data plans. This is achieved by analyzing and understanding the data generated for marketing campaigns, then offering promotions and/or exclusive offers for those who register for Public Wi-Fi. While this solution uses Wi-Fi as a means of connectivity (it does not use a mobile network or any other type of network explained), the Internet serves as a means of connecting and transmitting data to improve the customer experience. In conclusion, the Internet of Things (IoT) has no limits but should be used properly as it generates a high volume of data. Adequate tools are needed for the correct analysis of data as well as work teams with the experience necessary for decision-making, as IoT requires a large investment in technological resources and takes a long time to be implemented. So, to all the business out there, good luck in this idIoTization process! Carlos Mendoza CEO of Convergia Peru.
